hello
Keanu Reeves as Spike Spiegel?

So wrong. Keanu can't pull off that semi-arrogant-yet-still-charming permanent amused and mocking smirk that Spike has. Please don't destroy my favorite anime OF ALL TIME, Hollywood. Just...PLEASE.

Hope it's all just a crazy rumor. It's even worse than having Zac Efron playing Light in a Death Note adaptation.
hello
Less than two weeks into the new year and I am already sick, and had to stay home for two days in a row. I probably shouldn't even be posting this (or be using the computer at all), especially since it feels like my eyeballs and nose are on fire, but being sick is so very boring.

Although, on the plus side, I've gotten out of two meetings that I didn't really need to be in (my boss just wanted to me there for... well, I don't know, really, since they had nothing to do with me or any of my projects). Of course, it may been mildly entertaining, had I attended, for me to interrupt the proceedings every 30 seconds or so to blow my nose (or throw up, whatever).

Anyway, before I crawl back to bed and be bored further out of my mind, let me just share the pain of having heard the WTF-ery that is YamaNade's opening song. First of all, KAT-TUN was never suited for singing the theme to such a fluffy show in the first place. And now they've sort of tried to make them fit it with this. I hope it sounds better when it's not in that horrible preview quality, but the Autotuned danciness just feels...weird.

(I don't really know why I care so much about a live action adaptation of a manga I'm only marginally interested in, but it must be the boredom.)

At least it's not stuck in my head. Thanks Mr. Children.

Dear Real-Life Friends:

If you did not get the memo that circulated circa Twilight, please refrain from asking me to see New Moon with you while expecting me to flail with excitement and glee if you wish to survive. Thank you and have a nice day.

Oh, and The Wallflower drama has been cast. Kamenashi as Kyouhei... somehow boggles the mind. And I don't understand why the ballet guy is acting? He looks too old to play a high school guy.

ETA:
New-ish Professor Llayton game + New Zelda game + Not-so-new Kingdom Hearts game = Yes, I will be poor this Christmas.

hello
1. The Wallflower manga will become a live action drama? Hopefully the cast will be good. And they don't screw the story up in the transition.

I've been kind of hoping for an Ouran adaptation for the longest time, but that would be even MORE difficult to pull off. Some things don't translate well into live action. Plus, the twins would be rather difficult to cast, I suppose.

2. I am considering purchasing a computer-to-TV cable (or whatever you call it), which I was previously against (what would I need it for, my latop has a monitor, blah blah blah) so I can watch pretty boys IN HD, on my parents' 41-inch flat screen TV. Tell me this is practical.
hello
The other day, I went to watch the NEWS Winter Party Diamond DVD with a MASSIVE NEWS fan who managed to influence me (instead of the other way around, what a change), even though I'd seen it already, just so she can have someone to flail with and also to translate the Japanese. It's a fun DVD and all (the documentary part is the best one they've made), but that's not the point of this entry.

At some point in the concert (around Cherish -> Kibou Yell), Massu's trying to stuff one pant leg back into his boots, and I just wondered...

"I wonder what Massu's going to wear on his wedding day?" I said. "A sweatshirt, probably."
"Yeah," Jenny said.
"A hooded sweatshirt. A hoodie."
"And baggy pants."
"Baggy shorts. With the crotch all the way to the knees. And boots."
"Yellow boots."
"The pants will also have yellow polka dots," I went on.
"No, no! It will have stars. No, wait. Hearts."
"Because it's a wedding."

Sorry, Massu.

Said friend also gave Ryo several eyerolls for being an idiot who kept isolating himself throughout the whole DVD. I was actually rather surprised myself. All the previous NEWS DVDs had him and Yamashita acting like conjoined twins, but this time they seemed almost cold toward each other. But whatever. KoyaShigeTegoPi = their own brand of crazy.

My parents have gone and left me by myself at home while they visit a recently deceased relative's family. I couldn't go with them because I had an awful tummyache and I hope they get back soon. They were trying to scare me before they left, and while I'm not scared yet, I might be later. Haha. (How old am I, really?)

The typhoon Santi seems to have left the Philippines more or less intact. However, I think it may have affected phone and internet lines as my ISP has been weirdly sluggish and inconsistent when it's been amazingly fast before Santi arrived. Of course, it just so happens that I actually need to use the internet today, unlike in previous days. Ah, life.

Anyway, my recent restlessness and inability to focus have led me to decide that I need to make websites/shrines again. Hopefully, with something to channel my excess energies into I will have less time to bounce around aimlessly, staring blankly into space. For most people, this might seem like the complete opposite of what an aimless person should do, but for me it isn't. I'm weird like that.

Now, what to name the collective...hmmm...

A coffee addict who hasn't had coffee in exactly a week and seven hours.

Oh, wait...

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE. Well, at least to the people who celebrate it. Our neighborhood had its annual fake trick-or-treat thing two weeks ago, LOL. I wish we'd stop adopting these silly western customs only to completely miss the point.

In other news, I cleared my save file for Elite Beat Agents (yes, I am really that bored) and decided to play it all over. After all this time, I still suck at sk8er boi. My brain just can't stop trying to tear itself to shreds over the lyrics. Whoever wrote it must have gone to the Alanis School of Irony.

(But here's a secret: I do sing sk8er boi every now and then at karaoke. Voluntarily. But mostly because it's really loud and fast and has no tune to speak of so I can just shout through it and still get that coveted 100% score.)

Anyway, Halloween. I was speaking to a colleague who claims to have the "third eye" the other day, which just totally reminded me of one of my very own ghost story that I kind of forgot for a while.

You see, we had this neighbor who was quite old and he had a stroke and had to be confined to a hospital. A few days later, I was walking home and I spotted him leaning against their fence and looking at the street (in broad daylight).

So when I got home, I told my mother "Oh, and our neighbor's gotten better, huh?"
My mom just gives me a blank look and goes "Huh?"
"I just saw him."
"...He died yesterday."
"...Oh."
"..."

Yeah.

It's been a while since I had a weird dream and this weird dream was actually a week or so ago, but I feel the need to talk about it because of the level of WTF?! it induced in my mind.

EDIT:// You know what? I give up. My English grammar SUCKS. Downside to watching nothing but J-dramas and anime for the past few months, I suppose. Arrrgh.

Anyway, in my dream, I was having lunch. And it's a massive lunch, literally, of inihaw na bangus (roasted milkfish). It's so huge that half of the stomach area takes up my entire plate. When I started eating the fish, I was with my mother in our dining room. Nearly an hour later, she was done and I was still there.

UNEXPECTED CHANGE OF SCENE

A colleague at work sat down next to me in the office pantry to eat her own lunch, and I shared my giant milkfish with her and we talked...and two hours since I started eating passed and she left me.

UNEXPECTED CHANGE OF SCENE

Which was just fine, I could have gone on eating by myself-- Or not. As here comes the WTF? moment that probably contributed to my waking up...

Just as I was HALFWAY through the fish, who comes along but... Tegomass!

That's right. Tegoshi and Masuda. I DON'T EVEN LIKE TEGOMASS (as a unit -- nothing personal against Massu, but, ew, Tego), what were they doing in my dream?! Actually, I don't even like milkfish anymore, especially since I have to look at it nearly every day. (The same goes for shrimp and lobsters, too.)

For some reason, they're eating lunch in my dream. Well, actually, only Massu's eating and Tegoshi was just there to... cheer him on or something. And the worst thing was, it's the recent Tegomass that went on tour, with the crazy girly perm, complete with multi-colored hairclips.

*sigh*

And so continues my habit of NOT dreaming about events that are not tragic/ dramatic/ a sweeping epic fantasy, or that are of people that I actually like.

I WONDER HOW A DREAM OF A NEVER-ENDING MEAL IS INTERPRETED? PSYCHOLOGISTS? ANYONE?

Now I'll go back to being dead/ wading through my to-be-read pile. I've finally managed to strike out The People of Sparks (Jeanne DuPrau) and The Time Paradox (Eoin Colfer). And if ANYONE from the Philippines wants the ENTIRE Bartimaeus Trilogy, I want to sell mine, so comment or send me a message or something. Or tell your friends.

This is just to say hello to the dreamwidth/LJ world. I have really sucky internet and so I'm not really very motivated. I hope all the people in my flist are fine, considering all the various natural disasters and diseases that have moved around the world - not just within my own country - recently.

As for myself, my family and I are very fortunate to be living at a relatively high altitude and so we were not directly affected by the floods. Many people I knew, however, had their homes damaged. During times like these, it's easy to feel very helpless and wish I had all the money and resources needed to make things better. But of course, no amount of money and resources could ever take away the awful memories and replace the lives lost.

That said, I hope everyone will take care of themselves. (Although I probably should be telling that to myself, as I have somehow picked up a cold.)

Later, all!
kawaiiiii
But not the real life sort, although there is a lot of that going on just now that I won't talk about at this point because it's too long a story and ridiculous in parts.

No, no. I mean Buzzer Beat. And a couple of other dramas that have already finished airing but which I haven't finished downloading, but mostly, Buzzer Beat.

I really wasn't expecting to like this drama much because I'm an atypical Filipino and hate basketball. The one time I had cheerleading for my PE and had to go to all the basketall games was PURE. TORTURE. Also, from the previews and synopsis, it sounded like it was going to play out more like those typical K-dramas about love triangles that I have grown to despise during my K-drama obsession days.

But -- surprise -- it's actually really, really good! Sure, the first two episodes were kind of slow, but episode 3 onwards? Brilliance. It's just all so simple and normal that it's gone all the way over to being unique and refreshing. Plus, Naoki and Riko are so cute and weird and obviously insane. The scene in episode 6 where they're giggling over Naoki's freshly peeled scar? WEIRDED ME OUT TOTALLY. But also managed to be adorable. The two characters are just so comfortable and natural together that I can really believe how they're drawn to each other, despite how they both seem to be made of so much FAIL. I mean, Naoki's an underachieving basketball player and Riko's an overachieving violinist who are "reaching for their dreams." This sounds so cutesy and vomit-inducing on paper, but it's just impossible to hate them when they're together.

That said, the ending of episode 8? If this is a sign that Naoki is going back to his ex despite everything that's already happened, I will throw things. Surely he can't be THAT stupid. But we've still got about 3 episodes to go -- the writers will want to add more conflict, I'm sure.

Also, this series has the best side-OTP ever. Shuji/Mai can out-cute Naoki/Riko ANYDAY. And Natsuki should just hook up with Utsu already. Or am I the only one getting a vibe off them?

I guess I'll just have to wait with the rest of those Naoki/Riko (and Shuji/Mai) shippers for episode 9, which will probably be fantastically delayed because Yamapi is down with the flu. I'm just happy that I haven't started Orthros no Inu yet, or else I'd be left hanging on an even bigger cliff, what with Ryo having the same flu and all. Talk about member ai.
hyper-love
First, RIP, Corazon Aquino. While I did not particularly admire her as a president, I do admire her as an exceptional woman and human being, and I think that's much more important.

So, I haven't been online much recently -- wait, let me rephrase that.

I've been online a LOT -- it's just that I hardly ever use the internet for anything other than *coughmumbledownloadingAsianDramasmumblecough*. But for anything else, there's just no time. I've even stopped stalking/lurking in all those message boards I've been stalking/lurking in, and obsessively checking my Google Reader (which probably has about 1000000+ new entries I have to read, as I am rather addicted to even the most trivial bit of news about anything under the sun). Work has been so insane that I'm going to have to take a leave of absence from the university. Again.

But there's always time for dramas, LOL. Sadly, there's not much time for reading, either. My TBR pile remains curiously undiminished from what it was at the end of 2008. It's true, I guess. TV rots your brain and turns you into a mindless zombie dying for more. I wonder what state I'll be in come September, when most of the American dramas I watch come back. I have to say, though, I think my love for House is starting to die *gaspshockhorror*. It's like they took out everything that made House a marginally decent person and multiplied what made him a bastard by a hundred. However, I stopped during the first few episodes of the last season, so I might be wrong? If I am, let me know and I'll pick it up again soon.

I also hope Chuck is getting a full season. I am so out of the loop with Western TV, what with my re-kindled interest in J-Dramas. My cycle since the dawn of time (or the internet) has always been Western TV -> J-Dramas -> Taiwanese Dramas -> K-dramas -> rinse, repeat. Which is pretty similar to my music cycle. I haven't listened to Japanese music intensively in a LONG, LONG time. And now that I'm listening to it again, I just dug out the KinKi Kids singles collection from my closet. I think I bought it when I was 16(?!) or so. Seeing it made me laugh for some reason. I remember being addicted to "Genki ga kuta kuta."

*goes off to stalk some message boards*
hello
To the people that recommended to me Nobuta wo Produce and (to a lesser extent) Proposal Daisakusen the last time I asked for J-drama recommendations, it's all your fault.

I was happily ignoring Yamapi outside of the context of NEWS -- I was also not terribly interested in NEWS itself, apart from a handful of songs (mainly Cherish, Hoshi wo Mezashite, and Snow Express), due to the fact that the last fading remnants of the Japanese boy band fangirl in my system was dedicated to ARASHI.

But nooooo. I had to fall in love with Kusano Akira. And now I've gotten around to watching Kurosagi, Proposal Daisakusen, and am getting ready for Code Blue. Plus I've watched countless NEWS DVDs and guestings and have grown to like ALL of them. What the hell. I am totally late, smack in the middle, of the bandwagon that I never wanted to get on in the first place, LOL.

Damn you, Nobuta wo Produce, for being so beautifully simple and relatable and rewatchable that I have watched you 5 times in the last month! And for giving Yamapi a character that suited him well and which he could play to perfection! Arrrgh!!! The beautiful mess of contradictions that is Kusano Akira is one of the best characters I've ever encountered. He's just so much fun to study because he can seem like such an insensitive idiot one moment but seems to be (accidentally) wise in the next. Maybe I like him because he reminds me of Tamaki (Ouran) minus the weird denial system.

...On non-Yamapi but still J-dorama related stuff, I've been seeing a lot of positive feedback for Last Friends. Is it worth watching?

This article made me LOL.

First of all, it's called "Hollywood Young and Connected Throw D.I.Y. Music Shows."

Okay, I'll pause while you vomit.

Let me just start off by saying that I hate indie snobs. They annoy me to hell. I like certain indie bands. Their rabid fans, not so much. Especially those that go all Indie >>> Mainstream just because they're ~indie.

That said, the above-linked article talks about "indie" bands that are a joke. When your rich parents are shipping your gear via helicopters/ "professional contacts," I'm sorry, but you don't count as a D.I.Y. band, and it's an insult to those people who actually go out and drive miles and miles to play city to city, getting gigs solely by word of mouth.

Piracy is not entirely to blame for the decline of the music industry (mainstream or indie). It's the surplus of bands who are in it just because it's "cool." Most of the music these days are just slapped-together audio equivalents of a McDonald's cheeseburger.
banzai!
So someone made a hilarious edit of scenes from Buffy and Twilight and mashed them together to highlight Edward Cullen's creepy behavior and the proper response. Also, it highlighted the fact that Sarah Michelle Gellar can act and RPattz really... can't. SMG's facial expressions are FULL. OF. WIN. It's fantastic, is all I can say.

Edward: You're like a drug to me. You're like my own personal brand of heroin.
Buffy: Oh my God, are you twelve?

The video is pretty huge, so I'm putting it under a cut.

If only Twilight really ran like this! )

If you are reading this right now, you have more luxury than someone in Iran could ever hope for right now. If you are watching TV or a video on youtube, updating your status on Facebook, Tweeting, or even texting your friend, you are lucky. If you are safe in your home, and were able to sleep last night without the sounds of screaming from the rooftops, you need to know and understand what is happening to people just like you in Iran right now.

They are not the enemy. They are a people whose election has been stolen. For the first time in a long time, a voice for change struck the youth of Iran, just as it did for many people in the United States only seven months ago. Hossein Mousavi gained the support of millions of people in Iran as a Presidential candidate. He stands for progressiveness. He supports good relations with the West, and the rest of the world. He is supported with fervor as he challenges the oppressive regime of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

On Friday, millions of people waited for hours in line to vote in Iran's Presidential election. Later that night, as votes came in, Mousavi was alerted that he was winning by a two-thirds margin. Then there was a change. Suddenly, it was Ahmadinejad who had 68% of the vote - in areas which have been firmly against his political party, he overwhelmingly won. Within three hours, millions of votes were supposedly counted - the victor was Ahmadinejad. Immediately fraud was suspected - there was no way he could have won by this great a margin with such oppposition. Since then, reports have been coming in of burned ballots, or in some cases numbers being given without any being counted at all. None of this is confirmed, but what happened next seems to do the trick.

The people of Iran took the streets and rooftops. They shout "Death to the dictator" and "Allah o akbar." They join together to protest. Peacefully. The police attack some, but they stay strong. Riots happen, and the shouting continues all night. Text messaging was disabled, as was satellite, and websites which can spread information such as Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and the BBC are blocked in the country. At five in the morning, Arabic speaking soldiers (the people of Iran speak Farsi) stormed a university in the capital city of Tehran. While sleeping in their dormitories, five students were killed. Others were wounded. These soldiers are thought to have been brought in by Ahmadinejad from Lebanon. Today, 192 of the university's faculty have resigned in protest.

Mousavi requested that the government allow a peaceful rally to occur this morning - the request was denied. Many thought that it would not happen. Nevertheless, first a few thousand people showed up in the streets of Tehran. At this point, it is estimated that 1 to 2 million people were there. Mousavi spoke on the top of a car. The police stood by. For a few hours, everything was peaceful. Right now, the same cannot be said. Reports of injuries, shootings, and killings are flooding the internet. Twitter has been an invaluable source - those in Iran who still know how to access it are updating regularly with picture evidence. People are being brutally beaten. Tonight will be another night without rest for so many in Iran no older than I am. Tonight there is a Green Revolution.

hello
For the benefit of possible future friends (and so my journal's page won't look too lonely in the mean time), here's a brief introduction about me. Basically, it's the same thing as the "Bio" on the Profile page, but it's still a work in progress. I guess this is cheating, but I'm sure I'll have something meaningful to say soon. After all, the Wimbledon's in... uh... June.

Me and My Awesomeness
Hi! I'm Meissa (not a typo), though some of you who have been on the internet since the dawn of time may know me as "daimira," champion procrastinator and neglecter of assorted websites, shrines, and more abandoned blogs than can be counted. That hardly matters, because I'm awesome, anyway.

I'm a scientist, writer, and government dog all in one tiny 5'0" package that loves dogs, water sports, and crazy insane extreme activities that often involve a lot of falling (or trying not to).

What I'll Probably Be Talking About
Expect a lot of entries about books and music. I might post the occasional book review, usually 2 years or so AFTER a book has reached fame, haha, by which point it has become overrated, and then I will likely just say "Hey, this book is OVERRATED." I enjoy the fantasy and young adult (which is basically just fantasy, anyway) genres, as well as the occasional horror and literary fiction.

I might also post a CD/artist review every now and then (this may actually be up to date). I lean more toward pop, indie/alternative pop and rock, and folk, although I do listen to "harder" stuff. However, I am not an indie snob -- kinda hard to be when your favorite artist EVER is half-immersed in mainstream pop.

I also watch a lot of TV shows -- except not on TV. And I love J/K/C-dramas (in that order), anime, and manga.

That's it for now. I'm off to watch Nobuta wo Produce. To the brilliant person(s) who recommended it to me, thanks for turning me into a zombie. Also, this show has finally made me understand the appeal of Yamapi. Weird.

It's time for an ending, and a beginning.
